In theory, one could use the Process plugin to detect if the Spotify executable is running (and there are a couple of threads on this forum containing such attempts and talking about the changes in Spotify, recently), but the whole thing would be incomplete, as you'd have no way of knowing if it began playing or not. So only the types Artist and Track are supported, but not State and Status, and it's the latter two that 'detect' when the player was started or began playing.
